IC5070 - The Pelican Nebula

The gaseous contortions of this emission nebula bear a resemblance to a pelican, giving rise to its name.
In time its name may change as over time the balance and placement of stars and gas will leave something that appears completely different.

Facts about IC5070 by Keith Turnecliff

The young stars in the nebula are heating up the cold gas in their vicinity and as a result, an ionization front gradually moves outward.
The Pelican Nebula is circumpolar so viewable to northern latitude observers all year round.

This star chart represents a view from Long Itchington for mid September at 10pm.
