NGC6992, along with NGC6995, comprise the eastern portion of the veil nebula, a supernova remnant in Cygnus.

Although this secion of thre veil can be seen more easily than the western portion (NGC6960), without a filter, it is far more beautiful when viewed with a narrow band or O-III nebula filter.
