The designation NGC7023 refers to the open cluster within the larger reflection nebula designated LBN487.

The dominant colour of the brighter reflection nebula is blue, characteristic of dust grains reflecting starlight.
The pretty petals of the Iris Nebula span about 6 light years. 

OIt is circumpolar so available to observers in northern latitudes all year round.
